The goal is to explore and develop ways to make students aware of sleep hygiene and to guide them on how to have good nighttime sleep and full daytime alertness.

User Research

According to the research done at George Brown College on the sleep quality and the level of daytime focus of the college students, a considerable number of students are suffering from not having quality nighttime sleep and consequently, they have trouble in their daytime tasks and that impacts the quality of their learning and also their school assignments. This problem is more evident in students’ classes held early in the morning. They cannot fully focus on the lessons since they get inadequate sleep at night; despite the fact that mornings are generally the most efficient time for learning.

After looking into 3 different concepts, I came up with a final concept which is a combination of 2 of them. I intended to create a hierarchy among every segment of the design, which can showcase the ideas that I have about its design. The dream-catcher logo reflects the idea of our subject which relates to sleep hygiene. The fonts used in the mobile app are from the Maison Neue family which is a sans-serif typeface suitable for modern-style apps.

Usability

“Sleep Clinic” is a mobile app which offers many efficient features that can be easily used by the target users. The app opens up with the Welcome screen containing the logo in the centre on a background. The next screen is the Alarm screen, which takes into account the condition in which the user’s body is in, for example if there has been alcohol or caffeine consumption, and how stressed/relaxed one is. The Statistics screen shows these conditions; moreover, it demonstrates all the data about the specific nights that the app has been used, as well as the history, notes, quality of sleep and the amount of sleep one has go in a week, month or year.
Users can benefit from listening to calming music, sounds of nature, and short audio stories while trying to fall sleep. These features exist on the Alarm screen. Smart alarm allows the user to sleep for a certain amount of time, for example for 3 minutes or 2 hours.
The Clinic screen includes three user features: Meditation, Breathing Exercises, and Do’s & Don’ts. In the mediation section, users can learn how to meditate effectively before going to bed to ease the sleeping process. There are several different methods of meditation presented on the Clinic screen. Breathing exercises help the user to control the pace of their breath which brings about calmness.
In the Do’s & Don’ts section, the user can take advantage of the many beneficial tips and tricks in order to have a better sleep at night and total focus during daytime. “Sleep Clinic” is of advantage to those students who suffer from daytime sleepiness and lack of sleep at night time.
